The Most Common Business Problem

At a Leadership and Management conference I asked 150 delegates this question:

“How many of you started your career wanting to be a manager?”

Unsurprisingly the answer was only about 5 people.

The vast majority started their careers because they were interested in a particular subject: accounting, software, legal, sales, engineering, marketing.

Successful people move roles more frequently than others and more is expected of them simply because they are talented. But this also means they will frequently be asked to work in situations they have never wanted, or know how, to do.

Ironically many people problems are created through success.

Because they have talent and create results they get moved or promoted into a field they know little about and in which they have no experience.

Now they control the budget, people and make serious business decisions but can they think easily in their new role?

Here are some common People Problems

Technical people who need to be commercial
*  Commercial people who need to manage
Systems people who need to understand people
*  Managers who need to be more entrepreneurial
Shy people but technically skilled who need to present and support the sales process

The next problem is that the higher they go the less their transition is supported because they ‘should’ be able to make the transition themselves.
Then human nature messes things up even more.

Most people don't like to admit when they are struggling and the higher up the ladder they go the less they ask for help. These are risky and expensive problems.

Certain Change specialises in working with willing and able people who recognise their weaknesses and need to solve them quickly. We teach technical people to think like managers, managers to think commercially and shy people how to win business with the power of their personality.

Talented people need support and attention more than problem people because they create your company’s results.
